Licensure within ShidokanUSA

At ShidokanUSA, we believe that joining a federation should be more than just paperwork—it’s the beginning of a long-term relationship rooted in shared values, growth, and mutual respect. Our licensure process is designed to ensure that each member dojo is a good fit for our community and that we, in turn, support the unique needs of every school and instructor. We offer three progressive levels of licensure, each representing a deeper level of commitment and collaboration.

Associate Membership – The "Dating Phase"

When a school initially joins ShidokanUSA, it begins with an Associate Membership—a one-year, probationary period. This introductory phase gives both parties time to explore compatibility. During this time, the school can assess whether Shidokan's traditions, support, and values align with its goals, while we determine if the dojo is a good fit for our family.

Charter Membership – The "Engagement Phase"

Upon successful completion of the probationary period, a school is granted Charter Membership, valid for one year. This marks a deeper commitment between the school and ShidokanUSA. At this stage, our leadership team and fellow dojo owners actively support the charter member, offering guidance in both technical martial arts instruction and school management.

Whether your goal is to grow your student base, refine your curriculum, or become a full-time professional martial artist, we are here to help you reach your next level.

Ryu-Ha or Kai-Ha Licensure – The "Marriage Phase"

After completing the charter phase, eligible schools are awarded a full Ryu-Ha or Kai-Ha Licensure:

  • Ryu-Ha Licensure is granted to dojos carrying on the teachings of a specific traditional style (e.g., Goju-Ryu, Shorin-Ryu, Shito-Ryu).

  • Kai-Ha Licensure is awarded to schools that teach an eclectic or organizational blend of martial arts styles.
